Content Policy
Last updated: 27 September 2026
NovelRelease is for serial fiction: original stories and fan fiction, published chapter by chapter, and the conversations around them. This policy says what can be published here and how we act when something breaks it. It is part of our Terms of Service.
Ratings, tags and warnings
Rate every book honestly:
- Everyone: fine for all readers.
- Teen: some violence or strong language.
- Mature: adult themes, such as graphic violence or sexual content between adults.
Add content warnings for anything a reader would want to know before starting, such as graphic violence, sexual content, self-harm or abuse. Mark spoilers in comments and reviews with the spoiler option. Staff may change a book's rating or tags if they are wrong.
Not allowed anywhere
- Sexual content involving anyone under 18, or characters described or presented as under 18, in any form. We remove it, close the account and report it to the authorities where the law requires.
- Content that promotes or glorifies terrorism or violent extremism, or gives real instructions for serious harm (weapons, explosives, hard drugs).
- Threats, harassment, doxxing (posting someone's private details) or content that targets a real person.
- Hate: attacking people for their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. Fiction may portray prejudice; it may not be used to promote it.
- Sexual content about real people, and any intimate image shared without consent.
- Encouraging suicide, self-harm or eating disorders.
- Spam, scams, malware, and links that pretend to be something else.
- Other people's writing posted as your own, or without their permission (see Copyright).
- Anything illegal where you live or in the country where NovelRelease is operated.
Fiction and dark themes
Stories can be dark. Violence, crime, war, abuse and cruelty can appear in fiction, with the right rating and warnings. What we look at is whether a work stays fiction: we act on content that targets real people, is made to harass, or breaks the rules above however it is framed.
Comments, reviews and messages
Be civil. Criticise the writing, not the writer. Do not flood threads, post spoilers without the spoiler flag, or advertise. Reviews should be about the book you read. Comments and reviews containing words on our blocked list wait for a moderator before they appear.
Fair play
Do not buy, trade or fake seals, reviews, reads, follows or ranking positions, and do not use extra accounts to support your own books. Do not use tips, gifts or unlocks to move money between your own accounts. Promotions must follow this policy like any other content.
Copyright
Only post work you wrote or have permission to post. Fan fiction is welcome when it is transformative and marked as fan fiction; do not post chapters, translations or large extracts of other people's published books.
If you believe something on NovelRelease infringes your copyright, email the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet) with:
- a link to each page concerned;
- the work you own and how it is being copied;
- your name and contact details;
- a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and that the information in your notice is accurate and you own the rights or act for the owner;
- your physical or electronic signature.
We remove content when we receive a valid notice and tell the person who posted it. If they believe it was removed by mistake, they can send a counter-notice to the same address with the same details. We close the accounts of repeat infringers.
What happens when something breaks this policy
Depending on how serious it is and whether it has happened before, staff may:
- hold or remove the comment, review, chapter or book;
- change a book's rating or tags;
- send you a warning;
- restrict your account (you can still read, but not post, vote, spend quills, message or publish);
- close your account and withhold earnings that came from breaking the rules.
When we remove your content or restrict your account, we tell you why. If you think we made a mistake, write to the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet) and a different member of staff will look at it.
Reporting
Use the Report button on any book, chapter, comment, review or profile. Reports are private: the person you report does not see who reported them. For anything urgent or illegal, also email the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet).
