Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of NovelRelease, which runs NovelRelease ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the site you agree to them, to our Content Policy and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use NovelRelease.

You must be at least 13 years old, or older where the law of your country requires a higher age to use online services without a parent's consent. Books rated Mature are meant for adults; if you are under 18, do not read or publish them.

You can read without an account. To comment, review, follow, give seals, buy quills or publish, you need an account. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account. One person may hold one account, unless we agree otherwise.

You keep the copyright in everything you publish: books, chapters, author notes, comments, reviews and profile text ("your content").

So that we can run the site, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, display, format and distribute your content on NovelRelease, in its feeds, in offline copies readers save, in search results and in previews and links that promote the site or your book. The licence ends when you delete the content, except for copies already saved offline by readers, backups kept for a limited time, and content we must keep for legal reasons or to settle a dispute.

You confirm that you have the right to publish what you post, and that it follows our Content Policy. Fan fiction must be marked as fan fiction and credit its source work; it gives you no rights in the characters or worlds it borrows.

You can edit, unpublish or delete your books and chapters at any time. Readers who unlocked a chapter you later delete lose access to it; unlocks are not refunded when that happens.

Quills are a site currency for supporting writers. You can buy them in packs, earn a few through daily check-ins, and receive them from readers as a writer.

• Quills you buy or get free can only be spent on NovelRelease: on tips, gifts, chapter unlocks, memberships and book promotions. They cannot be exchanged for money, transferred between accounts or sold, and they have no value outside the site.
• Prices are shown in US dollars before you pay. Payment is handled by our payment providers.
• All quill purchases are final once the quills are in your account, except where the law gives you a right to a refund. If a payment is refunded or disputed, we take the quills back, even if that puts your balance below zero. After 7 days below zero you cannot spend quills, comment or review until you buy enough to get back to zero.
• Spending is final. An unlocked chapter stays unlocked for as long as the author keeps it on the site. A membership opens the author's early-access chapters for 30 days and does not renew on its own.
• We may change pack prices and what things cost in quills. Changes do not affect quills already in your account.

When readers tip you, send you gifts, unlock your chapters or join your membership, the quills are added to your earned balance.

• Earned quills are held for 7 days before you can exchange them, to allow for refunds and disputes.
• You can exchange earned quills for money once you have at least 1,000 quills. Each 100 quills are worth $1.00 before an exchange fee of 20%.
• Payouts go to the Stripe or PayPal account you connect, once your balance reaches $10.00. Your payment provider's own terms and fees also apply, and you are responsible for any taxes on what you earn.
• If a reader's payment is refunded or disputed, we may take the related earnings back, including from future earnings.
• We may hold or cancel earnings that come from fraud, stolen payment details, self-dealing or a breach of these terms.

Writers can make a chapter early access for up to 30 days; after that it is free for everyone. Seals, rankings, featured books and paid promotions are how we show books to readers; we decide how they work and may change them. A promotion buys a place on the site for the weeks you choose, not a number of readers.

Follow the Content Policy. Do not:

• break the law, or help anyone else do so;
• harass, threaten or impersonate anyone;
• try to get into accounts or parts of the site that are not yours, or disrupt the site;
• scrape or copy books in bulk, or re-publish other people's work;
• use bots, multiple accounts or payment tricks to game rankings, seals, check-ins, promotions or earnings;
• use the site to send spam or advertising you were not asked for.

Staff may hold, edit or remove content, and may restrict or close accounts, when content or behaviour breaks these terms or the Content Policy, or to protect readers, writers or the site. A restricted account can still read but cannot comment, review, vote, report, spend quills, message or publish. We tell you the reason when we restrict your account. If you think we got it wrong, write to the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet).

You can report books, chapters, comments, reviews and people with the Report button. Copyright complaints go to the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet) (see the Content Policy).

You can stop using NovelRelease at any time. You can delete your account yourself under Settings, Privacy, or write to the contact address in the Admin CP (not set yet) from the email address on the account. Your books, comments, reviews and library are then deleted. We keep payment and payout records as the law requires, and quills in your account are lost. An account that has received payments or payouts, holds earned quills or has a negative quill balance is closed by writing to us, so those records can be settled and kept.

We may close accounts that break these terms. If we close your account without a serious breach on your part, we will pay out earnings you are owed.

NovelRelease is provided as it is. We work to keep it running and your data safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available, error-free or unchanged. Features may change, and we may add, change or remove them.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for lost profits or data, or for content posted by others. Our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 100 US dollars. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer.

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will tell you on the site before it takes effect. If you keep using NovelRelease after that, the new terms apply.

These terms are governed by the laws of the country where NovelRelease is operated, without taking away protections you have under the law of the country you live in.
